We turned our rented bedroom into a hotel-worthy retreat without drilling a single hole or spending a fortune. Here is the full before-and-after.
The before
Standard rental bedroom with builder-grade furniture, bland walls, and a basic bed setup. Zero personality, zero coziness.
The approach
We focused on layers, lighting, and a few key swaps that make the biggest impact for the smallest investment.
1. Bedding layers
Swapped the flat sheet for a linen duvet cover in a warm white. Added a chunky knit throw, three varying-sized Euro shams, and a row of accent pillows in coordinated textures (linen, velvet, and woven cotton). Instantly makes a bed look styled and inviting.
2. Warm lighting
Replaced the overhead bulb with a warm-toned floor lamp beside the reading chair and swapped the bedside lamps for softer, warmer bulbs (2700K). Added a string of fairy lights behind the headboard post for a subtle glow.
3. Wall decor without damage
Used command strips to hang a gallery of three framed prints in muted tones. Added a large leafy plant in the corner for life and softness.
4. Rug definition
Layered a neutral jute rug under the bed, extending slightly beyond the nightstands. Added a smaller woven throw at the foot of the bed for texture.
5. Greenery
Added a tall floor plant (ficus) in the corner and a small succulent on the nightstand. Plants add life, color, and make the space feel curated.
